Humanists of Greater Portland (HGP) is pleased to sponsor an annual essay contest to encourage Portland area high school seniors with financial support in their continued educational journey and in learning more about Humanism.
Scholarship Details
- Exclusively for Portland Metropolitan Area students
- Essay topics relate to Humanism and current issues
- Over $80,000 awarded since 2012
- Scholarship amounts vary, depending on available funding
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a high school senior Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties in Oregon or Clark County in Washington
- Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must submit parental permission
- Must provide school transcripts
Application Process
- Pick up application forms and contest details from high school counselors or download them from the HGP website
- Write an essay (750–1,200 words) on the announced topic for the year
- Submit the completed application, essay, parental permission, and school transcripts by the mid-spring deadline
- Await selection and notification by the HGP scholarship committee
- Winners must submit proof of post-secondary plans prior to receiving funds
Winners need to submit proof of post-secondary plans prior to receiving their scholarship funds. They present their essays at our Sunday morning meetings, and videos of these readings are available through the website.
