The Ming Chen Foundation is a registered 501-c non-profit, whose mission is to support modern eye care education. We provide scholarships to ophthalmology residents, and have recently opened up the scholarships to include financial assistance for optometric residents, medical school students and college students based on financial need. Due to travel restrictions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have temporarily altered our ophthalmology travel scholarship program. Scholarships of $2,000 will still be provided to eligible recipients.
However, instead of funding travel to Hawaii to shadow Dr. Ming Chen, funds can be used for 1) safe travel to visit a mentor to obtain real world clinical experience and observation of surgery or 2) to attend an ophthalmology meeting. Scholarship recipients will receive $1,000 upfront for travel expenses, and $1,000 after submitting a report to the scholarship fund, detailing their educational experience. We hope to be able to host scholarship recipients in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii again soon! For optometry, medical school and college students, the Ming Chen Foundation is providing financial assistance on a case by case basis.
