Scholarship Description

Two scholarships are to be awarded each year (one for a male student and one for a female student), up to $50,000, for prospective or recent high school graduates planning to attend a post-secondary institution for vocational or technical training. Before you begin the application you will need your high school transcript (digital or paper copy), your completed FAFSA and/or EFC (Expected Family Income), or be able to provide it by August 15th and four short essay answers (you can view the questions on the scholarship provider's website). You may save your application and finish it at a later time.

Recipients must attend mandatory trainings and check-ins, and accept mentoring and coaching provided by Urban Ventures. Recipients, while attending their post-secondary program(s), must maintain a 2.75 GPA (providing evidence of up-to-date progress, as needed) and be in good standing with their institution and Urban Ventures. This award is not renewable and is competitive but is designed to cover up to two years of training. Scholarship monies will be applied after any eligible financial aid is awarded from the federal, state, and local government and/or the educational institution.

To apply, you must be on track to graduate in June of the year the scholarship is awarded or have graduated from high school in the last year. G.E.D. recipients also qualify. Applicants must be a resident of Minneapolis and/or attend a high school located in Minneapolis. (Preference may be given to South Minneapolis residents/students or Urban Ventures participants.)

Applicants must have a high school GPA of 2.75 or higher or have already been accepted into an institution of higher education. If you do not meet this requirement, you can still apply but you will need a second recommendation letter than comes from one of your current or recent teachers. That recommendation must be submitted in writing directly by your teacher before the application deadline. You must be planning to attend a technical or vocational school in order to pursue a career in a related field and have completed the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or be able to do so by the scholarship application deadline on May 15th. You will be asked to provide a Student Aid Report (SAR) in order to receive the scholarship.
