I am a first generation college student in my family and I reside in Southwest Virginia where I have my 65 year old mother living with me. I live with and have been in recovery from the mental illness Schizoaffective for about five years now. I recently graduated from a two-year college with two associate's degrees, one in Human Services and one in General Studies. My goal is to obtain my bachelor's degree in Social Work and become a Mental Health Skill Building Clinician, to help others like myself living with mental illnesses. To show society and those out there recovery is possible and there is the chance to reach and achieve your desired dreams and goals, big or small. Currently I work part-time as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and have full time expenses. This scholarship would lessen some of the financial burden I am facing as I transition to Mary Baldwin in the Spring of 2021.

I applied for this scholarship because I want to be the 1st family member to go to a good college and I already applied for it too, it's the Culinary Institute of America. I really enjoy cooking and baking, even though I'm a Junior in high school I still take early college and take culinary arts there but it's only for my certificate. I'd still like to know more about culinary.

This year has brought many challenges: I lost my job due to the pandemic, lost my opportunity for employer-funded tuition, struggling to pay for student loans, and now I have to pay for the rest of my schooling out of my own pocket with no financial help. I am a junior in college, and I am looking for any opportunity to help out. Winning a scholarship such as this could make all the difference!

I have to go back and attend Columbus State Community College to help me get a real full-time job. Since I have been able to save up growing up and started working in retail early to stay out of student loans. Because of this, I haven't been able to get unpaid internships or experience to help me so I am hoping more classes will better help my Bachelor degree. I would love this scholarships so I can continue to stay out of student debt and reach a goal of getting my dream job.

Although I’m proud of what I have accomplished, I’m graduating next semester and could really use some help since I’m going to be working less to take 6 classes and focus on school.

Pamela W  on 11/4/2019 7:47:57 PM

Good evening. I am 52 years old and I am wanting to better myself by going back to school. I am interested in biblical studies and psychology, focusing on counseling. I've heard God speaking to me for many years to go back to school but dismissed the idea believing I would not make the cut to finish, or that I would get too overwhelmed and quit. I need another chance to make a difference. This time it's for me.

Yes I will be applying for this scholarship for my daughter. She had such a hard time in High School. She graduated in 2018 and took a year to work on her math, english and other things. My daughter had an IEP and really applied herself. She is a twin and her sister has been approved for scholarships but she hasn't heard anything. She feels its because she had such a hard time and barely made the C average. I want to see a smile on her face when she gets the opportunity to attend College without worrry.

Dan D  on 8/28/2019 12:42:42 PM

Good afternoon, My name is Daniel D. and I am humbly asking for assistance. I know there are a lot of us who want to go to college. I am fortunate I was able to make the first year, but I don't know about my sophomore year. My dream is to be a chef. I work full-time at Whole Foods and attend college full time for hospitality management. I wanted to attend culinary school but it was too expensive. I don't have my mom's support and my father passed away from lung cancer when I was little. That left a hole in my life and has affected my entire family. I suffer from anxiety and it's very difficult for me at times, but I push through regardless. I have always worked for everything I have and even pay my own rent at my own home. I was not able to fill out the FASFA because I don't have support from my mom to go to college. I love my mom and I know she's still hurting from my dad passing away, but I need help. No matter how money much I save, it's never enough. I am searching for aid, scholarships to piece together and here I am. I am not lazy by any means. I don't want to quite school. Please consider me for this scholarship. Humbled, Dan D.

Moses F  on 8/20/2019 1:51:31 PM

I just changed my major to Library and Information Technology. I would love to continue my education and eventually go on to State to earn my BA. Right now times are hard and my mother and I are living in a hotel in the greater Sacramento area. She works and is also in school pursuing her education. She gets a little help from being a veteran and she does the best she can with what we have. I'd like to get this scholarship because it'll help us continue to do what we need to do to get ahead.

Lianet Hernandez  on 8/14/2019 8:51:20 AM

I was born and raised in Cuba, and I came to the United States only four years ago when I was twenty years of age, barely managing the English Language. I have been living by myself for three years since 2016, with absolutely no help from any member of my family. I have been going to college for also three years nonstop, and I will be graduated by the end of this year 2019. I do not receive any financial help for my school and/or living costs, and I have been also working full time throughout all these years. I am planning to transfer to the University of Michigan-Flint, and I won’t receive any financial help from any member of my family or friends. University costs are pretty high for me, and I am planning mainly, not going in debt for my school ever, I am not planning on taking any student loan of any kind, so I will probably be taking a side part time job to help my finances as much as possible. I do know it will be a lot of hard work, but I strongly believe I can do whatever I firmly want to do. This scholarship will help me going to the university, and finishing my studies as I have planned.

Shauntelle B.  on 7/30/2019 3:42:56 PM

Good afternoon! I am applying for this scholarship to cover the fee for better housing. The location I live in currently is not up to code and I have acquired respiratory issues from living there. I am starting school again at the end of August and would love to acquire this scholarship to further help my parents who reside there as well and have a better place to study that will allow me to breath better. I will be starting an accelerated program in Biology, so a lot of at home studying will be required and I want to set myself for the best success. I thank you for this opportunity and for your consideration.

Liam Q  on 7/24/2019 9:41:15 AM

I'm gonna use this to put a dent in my tuition costs. I'm studying to become an industrial designer, so 2 grand saved on tuition means 2 grand I can spend on tools and other things to design the future. Hope I win.

Susan S  on 7/10/2019 10:05:02 PM

I am applying for this scholarship as I am going back to school after being out for 33 years and being a 1st generation at that! I am in need of some financial help to realize a dream of getting my Bachelors in Human Services. I currently work for a Head Start Center and received a new position of Recruiter and Family Advocate. This schooling would benefit me and my familes by recognizing and deciding on how I can help families withh diverse backgrounds. Thank you for any help you can give.

Antonio G  on 7/10/2019 6:01:20 PM

I have been doing other thing lately that do not cater to my dreams. I figured I'd use this as a first step towards making those dreams become reality. Like many other, I could sure use the financial support during this pursuit, but just the fact that I've dropped everything else is enough of a push to get me through this! Good Luck everyone!

Lesly N  on 6/30/2019 1:41:51 PM

I am applying for this scholarship because I need financial aid. I will be attending college in about a month and two weeks. Being the first generation of my family to attend a 4-year university is very exciting. Although, I am extremely concerned that I might not be the first generation after all. Since my Mother is a single parent at the moment, caring for 3 other kids can make it really hard to save up for my tuition. Not having anything at the moment is very alarming but I pretend calm. I cannot stress enough the need and care for financial aid.

Katja O  on 6/28/2019 5:06:44 PM

This place does not accept GED applicants

Jennifer E  on 6/15/2019 12:14:25 PM

Being part of a home where my mother tries hard to get her 7 children is not easy, sometimes I want to give up and stay at home to help her with expenses, but I look back and remember what she has sacrificed and seeing her tears of pride in an accomplishment of her children that is the most important thing to her that her swollen feet and battered hands from so much work.

Ha Long H  on 5/31/2019 12:08:22 PM

I joined the military to earn money for college and sponsor my parents over sea. I am hoping to receive this scholarship to lift the weight of my shoulder for my school tuition after I return from deployment oversea. I just want to save up as much money as possible to be able to buy a home for my parents and siblings while paying for college. While deploying, I study computer science on my own time to get ready to go back to school again when I get back. I am very thankful for this opportunity that is given to all of us. I will try and work hard to pay respect back for your support of my career.

An. D  on 5/31/2019 1:39:28 AM

I applied to this scholarship because being in a 4 kid household with a twin sister who is in college as well (not the same college) has been difficult for my parents. This scholarship is just enough to cover the rest of my tuition bill so I can schedule my classes and not have my parents struggle to pay the rest of the bill.

Callie R  on 5/24/2019 9:33:24 AM

My junior year in high school has come to a satisfactory close, and the dash to scrape up as much aid as possible becomes even more frantic. I am hopeful to receive this scholarship, as my ambitions are numerous and fruitful. My passion is to study molecular structure and biocheimstry – to conduct research and put forth new methods and technology in this area; I suppose it's my way of utilizing my skills to enhance life on Earth. Additionally, providing medical services to as many people as possible is also a goal of mine. I am very grateful for this opportunity. We all are.

Anna W.  on 5/13/2019 10:31:37 PM

My parents have worked hard to save money since I was born for my college tuition. They have been disciplined and faithful as they saved. However, with the costs of college, the money they sacrificially set aside will only cover about half of my college education. I have worked hard in college, and have been named to the Dean's List for my firsts two college semesters. I am very involved on campus and have been recognized by my college as an outstanding student who has been a campus leader. I hope you will consider assisting me with my education. I will continue to work hard and honor your support of my education.

Deborah C  on 5/7/2019 9:34:25 PM

I am applying for this scholarship because without it I will not be able to attend the seminary that I have been accepted to. It is of particular interest to me because I intend to teach on a college level. This scholarship will propel me in this direction.

I applied for this scholarship because I'm a transfer student going into my junior year, I work full time to support myself and my house hold. I didn't get approved for a lot of financial aide and I need all the help I can get. Websites like Scholarships.com help people like me connect to many scholarship options.

Julian R  on 4/18/2019 5:28:15 PM

I was struggling to stay in school because of my work schedule. I recently made a promise to myself that I at least take a class every semester from now on. I recently had to move out of a home and had to find a place on my own because our previous land lord was kicking us out. Now that me and a good friend of mine are renting out a 2 bedroom apartment, I have been spending more on living finances. On top of that, I am paying off a car. I have been doing really well so far in school and I keep telling myself every time I pay for classes that all this will pay off. I am hoping to catch a break to stop worrying about my finances. Any help would be great. I am still on a mission to become the first person in my family to graduate college. I am not letting anymore excuses stop me.

I am a graduating Junior at Discovery High School. I've spend about a year and a half in school due to medical issues my freshman year and horrendous events that caused me to drop out my sophomore year of high school. My goal is to go to Oregon State University to work towards and receive a Doctorates degree to become a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) or to Washington State University to study to be an attorney in Family Law. I work two part time jobs, go to school, and volunteer in my community for about five hours weekly. I am concerned that I will not be able to save enough money achieve my goals and help people on a greater scale and give back to my community.

I hope that I can one day be able to give back in the same magnitude. In the meantime, I'm going to keep looking for scholarships because I don't, I won't be able to graduate!

I was never offerd much help from my own high school becuase I did graduate so early. I really appreciate the simplicity of scholarships like these becuase of the amount of time saved with no essay required. So a big thanks to Niche and the Scholarship Committee!

Kayla Lee  on 7/21/2018 12:00:26 AM

Most of these comments are basically saying the same thing. We all need scholarships and Grant's to get us through college. We all know college is expensive and all of us want to be debt free after we graduate. I need these scholarships because I know that it is pretty hard to get those full ride scholarships and I dont want to stress myself out further worrying. With these scholarships, I can buy a car to get me back and forth to my family and not have to worry about them picking me up 3 hours away from home. I need these scholarships so that I can learn how to not depend on my parents and to better myself as a new coming adult. To get myself ready for my career and to be my own person.

I am applying for this scholarship because before I decided to go to college, I always dreamed of becoming a United States Marine. I got in touch with a recruiter when I was just about to turn 17, and I was in the delayed entry program for a whole year, until, a couple months before I was supposed to ship out to recruit training, I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor and epilepsy. My whole life came to a slamming halt. Now, after a notable amount of time and thought, I have decided to start Pre-Med to become a Pediatric Oncologist. However, we don't have the money for it, so this scholarship would be an excellent help for me to start on on the right foot, financially. Thank You.

Hello! I'm a college transfer student applying for this scholarship, in hopes of continuing my education when I start my new fall semester at University. While I am currently pursuing a BFA in either Animation or Graphics Design, I have only recently considered becoming a teacher or college professor one day. Perhaps I can also impact other lives around the world too, even through storytelling! Regardless, I want to help others reach their potential because it's something I value myself. I hope, with the help of this scholarship, I can positively influence other individuals, starting with my community and branching out as I continue my academic endeavors.

arianna S  on 5/21/2018 7:45:41 AM

I applied for this scholarship because it will help with my financial aid towards college. Growing up I always dreamed of going to a college and experiencing the late night study groups, joining a frat and becoming sisters for life, and just making new friends around the world. Watching my sister go has made me want to go even more! however, my parents took out a large amount of money for my sister to go to college, and of course, it's impacting me because we are only 1 year apart. I don't want my parent to be in a substantial amount of debt just to continue my education and i KNOW this scholarship will be a big help. thank you

I’m planning to major in psychology. This scholarship will help me to pay for some of my tuition of course but it will also help my community later in the future. I’m planning to help and understand my community by getting a degree in psychology. I want to understand why there’s a lot of violence in the world and how we can prevent it.

I am applying for this scholarship to help me and to help my family (parents) as I start my journey in my college financial responsibilities in 2019 because it will take a big financial gap to start my college education . This would help me to be able attend college and the college experience in buy the books , classes itself , and living and food expenses as I make choices of living at home or on college campus of the college of my chose .

Thank you for helping someone further their education! I would extremely appreciate this scholarship. I am currently pregnant and have great ambitions in continuing my education if given the opportunity. I would love to be stable enough to provide for me and my little girl. Thank you again!

I have not applied at this time, but plan to do so in the near future. Any amount of money would be helpful for this hungry adult student to help play the bills! Thanks for the chance to win!
