  • The William & Lanaea C. Featherstone Foundation and Coppin State University announce a strategic partnership that will create economic and professional opportunities for students from underrepresented communities. Access to higher education is a powerful driver that creates opportunities for underrepresented communities to achieve economic stability. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation expanded its programs supporting first-generation students to achieve higher education with college scholarships, tackling unemployment and underemployment through paid internships and our innovative workforce program that places participants in meaningful careers.

Access to higher education is paramount in transforming the lives of individuals and communities. However, the financial burden to receive an advanced degree has proven challenging for some. The Featherstone Foundation works to mitigate the economical strain and achieve Academic Equity in Higher Education for under-served and traditionally underrepresented students through scholarships.

This year, the partnership will award eight, $3,000 Featherstone HBCU Scholarships to high academic achieving students. To help support the many talented students in Baltimore City, this scholarship helps promote matriculation and student retention for those attending or seeking admission to HBCUs in Baltimore City.

Eight Coppin State students will receive $3,000 Awards. Two $3,000 scholarships will be designated for students from each of the four colleges within the University. In order to receive consideration for the award, applicants must be a current Baltimore City resident. SAT/ACT scores will be considered. Must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities; and a complete essays outlining career goals and aspirations. A letter of recommendation and applications from first-generation college students are strongly encouraged. Students must be enrolled during the academic year of the year the scholarship is awarded. Award winners are expected to attend an award ceremony.

My name is Helen Marie Hargrave. I am a senior at Coppin State University who is in financial need. My aid has not kicked in yet. This scholarship would help me pay down my bill and not worry about being dropped. The sad part is I am not eligible for this scholarship.
