Scholarship Description

To foster the growth of future leaders in solid waste management, the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) offers multiple scholarship opportunities for students in related academic fields. These scholarships support both undergraduate and graduate students, including returning students, and prioritize individuals with a connection to SWANA through membership. Awards such as the Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship and the Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship help ease the financial burden of education while encouraging careers in environmentally and economically sound waste practices.

Scholarship Details

  • Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship for graduate students
  • Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship for full-time university students (incoming juniors or above)
  • Open to SWANA student members and children/grandchildren of SWANA members in good standing
  • Field of study must be related to solid waste management
  • Total number of recipients and award amounts vary annually

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be enrolled full-time in a college or university program related to solid waste management
  • Graduate students eligible for the Stearns/SCS Scholarship
  • Undergraduate students who are at least incoming juniors eligible for the Gershman Scholarship
  • Must be a SWANA student member or sponsored by a SWANA member in good standing as of May 1

Application Process

  1. Ensure SWANA student membership or sponsorship by a SWANA member
  2. Determine eligibility for either the Stearns/SCS or Gershman Scholarship based on education level
  3. Prepare transcripts and academic records demonstrating full-time enrollment and relevant major
  4. Complete the scholarship application form, including any essays or supplemental documents
  5. Submit the application by the deadline (check current year’s specific date on SWANA's website)
