The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America offers the Dumitru Golea Goldy-Gemu Scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate students of Romanian origin according to the established requirements and rules. It is imperative that all forms be filled out completely and all copies of supporting documents accompany the applications. Therefore, upon applying, advise whether you are a recent high school graduate or are already enrolled in college.
To be eligible, applicants must: be of at least partial Romanian descent; be a citizen or permanent resident of either the United States or Canada; be of good character and active in school and/or community; be in the upper one-third of their graduating class or must be recommended by a school official (if applying as a high school senior); and be either a high school senior, current undergraduate or returning student (graduate students are ineligible). This is renewable for up to four years.
In addition to completing the application, applicants must also submit: a copy of the letter of acceptance (if applying as a high school senior or returning student) or transcript (if applying as a current undergraduate); three letters of recommendation; a recent posed photograph of himself/herself (suitable for possible publication); and a 300-word handwritten essay on the subject “How my Romanian heritage helps make me a better American/Canadian.” The scholarship check will be sent directly to the recipient.
