Scholarship Description

After his wife’s death, Charlie McMillan continued his community service with the Democratic Party, Habitat for Humanity and Mt. Olive Baptist Church as an usher. Although he did not serve very long in the military, Mr. McMillan continues to exemplify the values and physical energy of the “Army Strong” slogan.

Scholarship Details

  • Intended for Saginaw County residents pursuing higher education or vocational training
  • Open to high school seniors, college students, active or inactive military members, or veterans
  • Supports undergraduate, graduate degrees, or Career and Technical Education (CTE) training
  • Designed to celebrate and continue the McMillans' legacy of hard work, service, and education

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA required
  • Must be a resident of Saginaw County
  • Applicant must be pursuing an undergraduate, graduate degree, or CTE training
  • Open to active or inactive military members or veterans
  • Requires part- or full-time enrollment

Application Process

  1. Complete the scholarship application form, including personal and educational information.
  2. Submit proof of Saginaw County residency.
  3. Provide documentation of your military status, if applicable.
  4. Attach your most recent academic transcripts to verify your GPA.
  5. Submit an essay detailing your educational goals, how you plan to serve your community, and how the McMillans' story inspires you.

To be eligible for the Lee Essie and Charlie McMillan, Jr. Active/Inactive Military and Military Veteran Scholarship, applicants must: demonstrate financial need; be a Saginaw County resident; be a high school senior or current college student; have a 2.5 GPA; and be active or inactive military or a military veteran. This is open to students with both full and part-time enrollment. Dollar amounts for this scholarship will vary.
