Scholarship Description

In partnership with the Harvard University Center for Labor and a Just Economy and the Wurf Fund, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Union introduces the Union Scholars Program: a summer scholarship and internship opportunity for students who share our goal of promoting social and economic justice, civil rights, and elevating the dignity of public service.

Scholarship Details

  • Six-week paid summer internship during summer
  • $4,800 living stipend
  • $6,000 scholarship awarded based on financial need
  • Housing fully covered
  • Transportation costs paid including flights, trains, and rental cars
  • Four-day orientation at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts
  • Three-day program debrief at AFSCME Headquarters in Washington, DC
  • Ten students selected for the program

Eligibility Criteria

  • Undergraduate sophomore or junior at the time of application and interview
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Demonstrated interest in social and economic justice through the labor movement
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Faculty recommendation required

Application Process

  1. Complete the Union Scholars Program application
  2. Submit a faculty recommendation
  3. Ensure all application materials are submitted by February 28th
  4. Selected applicants participate in a virtual interview in March
  5. Final participants are notified by phone or email
  6. Accepted scholars complete orientation, internship placement, and program debrief

All applications are read thoroughly and reviewed for the students' interests, inspirations, values, and goals. Knowledge about unions and experience in the labor movement are not required for a student to be accepted into the Program. However, students with a desire to be a union organizer or have a career in labor are strongly encouraged to apply.
