The Sgt. Juan Calderon Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to qualified individuals to attend college/university or vocational education that meet the requirements below.

Scholarship Details

• Award amount: $2,500, with potential for multiple awards based on available funds
• For vocational and undergraduate programs only
• Limited to four total awards per recipient
• Funds are distributed directly to the educational institution

Eligibility Criteria

• Children of Veterans/Service Members in Hidalgo or Cameron Counties
• Minimum 2.7 GPA, verified by transcripts
• Two letters of recommendation (one professional, one personal)
• Engagement in athletics, JROTC, Scouts, civic societies, community volunteering, or employment

Application Process

1. 750-1000 word essay on service and sacrifice
2. Letter of acceptance from a post-secondary institution
3. Complete the application and gather required documents including proof of parent's service, GPA verification, letters of recommendation, essay, and acceptance letter
4. Submit the completed application by March 15 for first-time recipients

Renewal Process

1. Submit a renewal letter by February 15 for prior recipients
2. Provide an unofficial transcript showing a 2.7 GPA, proof of continued enrollment, participation in eligible activities, and a 1000-1250 word essay on a chosen subject
