Scholarship Description

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge invites individuals aged 13 to 18 to participate in a scholarship opportunity that explores complex scientific concepts through creative videos. Your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth keeping in mind that video is a dynamic visual medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc. is a lot more effective than standing in front of a blackboard talking.

Scholarship Details

  • Video Length: Up to 2:00 minutes
  • Topics: Physics, Life Sciences, or Mathematics
  • Peer Review: Engage in peer-to-peer review and scoring

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age Requirements: 13 or older by April 1st, not older than 18 by October 1st
  • Language: Submissions must be in English
  • Open to: Diverse range of participants, including homeschooled students, those with disabilities, and international students

Application Process

  1. Sign Up: Select a challenging topic from physics, life sciences, or mathematics.
  2. Create a Video: Develop a captivating video (up to 2:00 minutes) explaining the chosen concept with creativity and clarity.
  3. Submit Your Application: Provide a YouTube video link in your application.
  4. Peer-to-Peer Review: Engage in reviewing and scoring submissions from five other contestants.

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge encourages young minds to explore and present complex scientific ideas in an engaging way. You have the opportunity not only to compete but also to participate in the judging process through peer-to-peer review.
