The Lyons Family Aviation Scholarship supports young people who want to pursue a career as a professional pilot by helping fund their private pilot certificate. Recipients must use the scholarship funds toward their private pilot certificate within eight months of being selected and complete training at a Foundation-approved local flight training center.
Scholarship Details
- Scholarship awards range from a minimum of $1,500 to the full cost of a private pilot course
- The number of recipients is determined by the Foundation board and available funding, with at least one recipient selected
- All flight training must be completed at a local flight training center approved by the Foundation
- The scholarship does not provide funding for college or university tuition, including tuition for aviation programs
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 24 on April 25th of the scholarship year
- Applicants must not currently hold a Private Pilot Certificate for airplanes
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents
- Applicants must be of good moral character and have no misdemeanor or felony convictions
- Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak English to FAA standards
- Applicants must hold an FAA First-Class, Second-Class, or Third-Class Medical Certificate and provide proof with the application
- Applicants may pursue their license independently and must not be enrolled in a college, university or aviation program at the time of the application
Application Process
- Complete the scholarship application
- Prepare an unofficial transcript to submit with the application
- Obtain two letters of reference
- Complete and sign the Release of Liability form
- Include proof of your FAA First-Class, Second-Class or Third-Class Medical Certificate
- Mail the completed application and all required supporting documents to the Foundation
- Wait for notification from the Foundation. Only selected recipients are notified, and recipients are contacted by registered mail and/or telephone
