  • The Science Without Borders Challenge is an international contest that engages students and teachers in ocean conservation through art. This annual competition inspires students to be creative while promoting public awareness of the need to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources, contributing to the overarching goals of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation. The Challenge is open to students 11-19 years old, with scholarships of up to $500 awarded to the winning entries.

    The theme for the this years Science without Borders® Challenge is “The Sixth Extinction.” For this year’s contest, you can help create awareness about endangered species. We ask students to create a piece of artwork that highlights the beauty and importance of a marine species that is on the brink of extinction.

I am applying for this scholarship because of the power of a one hour science class in seventh grade. I specifically remember learning about ocean acidification. With ocean temperatures rising the ocean becomes acidic, too acidic for shell fish, crabs, and coral to survive. They are literally dissolving in their own habitat. I am not sure why that stuck with me, but it influenced me to choose my biology project topic for the effect ocean warming has on coral reefs and to apply for this scholarship.

I'm planning on applying for this scholarship, it's just creating art about the ocean so people can be interested in preserving our oceans correct? If that's the case I'm definitely applying! I'm actually going to college to study environmental science. We need to start taking care of our oceans, so having more people to support marine life will be incredibly helpful!

I am applying because the ocean is an amazing creation and it's beauty is being dulled by us humans, yet us humans do protect the ocean's beauty. The ocean is essential to us,for food, adventure, love, science, art, and even therapy. The ocean is art, it is something we cannot take our eyes off. With this scholarship, I will be more than grateful. The sea is a wonder and a true form of art that I love painting and drawing. My goal is to keep the beauty in the ocean through a message to protect it.

I am applying for this scholarship because I find marine biology intriguing and believe it is very important the we conserve what is left of the unpolluted ocean not only for marine life but also for the world. One way to do so it to spread awareness through what many people love and can relate to, art.
