The Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference offers high school students a unique opportunity to explore journalism, multimedia storytelling, and free expression. Selected students represent their state and participate in an in-person conference designed to develop skills, confidence, and leadership. The program celebrates students who demonstrate creativity, courage, and a passion for telling meaningful stories.
Scholarship Details

- Conference dates are June 21st through June 26th
- Participants represent their state or Washington, D.C.

Eligibility Criteria
- Current high school junior
- Interested in journalism or multimedia storytelling including digital and multimedia formats
- Demonstrates qualities of a free spirit such as leadership, creativity, courage, or innovation
- Available to attend the full conference in person from June 21st to June 26th
- United States citizen or permanent resident
- Resident of one of the 50 states or Washington, D.C.
Application Process
- Complete the online application form
- Upload an unofficial high school transcript
- Upload one or two letters of recommendation with contact information for the recommender
- Upload journalism or multimedia storytelling samples or provide public links to up to three works
- Upload a color headshot
- Submit two essays of up to 500 words each addressing interest in journalism and free spirit qualities
This program is ideal for students who are eager to use storytelling to inform, inspire, and create change. Applicants are encouraged to share their passions, experiences, and creative work through a complete and thoughtful application. Students who identify as innovators and storytellers should apply to represent their state and take part in this immersive educational experience.
