Scholarship Description

Each school year the SAFE program is open to highly-successful, incoming high school juniors who are interested in pursuing a college degree in fields related to the energy industry. Apply during junior year of high school and intern with us during the summer.

Scholarship Details

  • Paid summer employment at CPS Energy for a minimum of eight weeks
  • Mentorship and professional development opportunities
  • Exposure to various public utility careers and industry knowledge
  • Real-world work experience related to future academic goals
  • Designed to promote higher education in energy-focused fields

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Must be a high school junior at the time of application
  • Must have a grade average of B or higher
  • Must rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class
  • Must maintain above-average attendance
  • Must express interest in pursuing a degree applicable to the utility industry
  • Must reside in the CPS Energy service area
  • Must participate in full-time summer employment after junior year
  • Must attend all CPS Energy-sponsored summer activities
  • Must pass a drug test and background screening before employment

Application Process

  1. Confirm eligibility based on age, academic performance, and residency
  2. Complete the CPS Energy online application through the careers portal
  3. Upload required documents including high school transcript, resume, two letters of reference, essays, and parent consent form
  4. Participate in the interview and selection process if chosen as a finalist
  5. Begin full-time summer employment with CPS Energy upon acceptance

The SAFE program benefits students with work experience, enhanced self-esteem, and a true picture of their chosen field of study. Student selection for participation in the program is based upon the student's application, interview, references, essays and their ability to meet all criteria outlined in the program participation checklist.
