Organized and incorporated in 1899, the Norwegian National League (NNL) of Chicago exists for the purpose of uniting all Norwegian-American organizations in Northern Illinois. The NNL serves as an umbrella organization comprised of delegates from these organizations. Through various programs, the League and its members endeavor to keep the Norwegian cultural heritage alive. Applicants have at least a 3.0 GPA and reside in eligible Illinois counties.
To encourage the study of Norwegian heritage the Norwegian National League has developed and administers a scholarship program open to children of Norwegian descent. The students research and write a paper on the topic “Your Family’s Norwegian Heritage” (see the Scholarship Writing Guide for guidance). Winning students usually receive their award in a ceremony during the after the Syttende Mai parade festivities. The total number of awards will vary.
