Scholarship Description

The Walsh Scholarship, worth $3,500, is open to university/college students who have completed at least one year of higher education, are currently enrolled in a degree program (undergraduate or graduate), and who are pursuing a career specifically in news/journalism editing.

Scholarship Details

  • Applications open August 15 each year
  • Application deadline is November 15
  • Six total scholarships are awarded annually, including the Walsh Scholarship
  • The Walsh Scholarship is awarded to a student aspiring to edit news, demonstrating passion for language and journalism
  • The other five scholarships are awarded to students committed to editing written materials in any field
  • Recipients are selected based on talent, passion for editing, and effectiveness in improving writing
  • A student may apply for both the Walsh award and one of the other five scholarships but can win only one

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must have completed at least one year of higher education
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at the time of the deadline
  • Must demonstrate an interest in editing as a career
  • Scholarships are open regardless of nationality, residence, or academic concentration
  • Previous scholarship winners are not eligible
  • Members of the ACES Board of Directors, ACES administrators, or their families are not eligible

Application Process

  1. Prepare an application demonstrating interest in editing and effectiveness in improving written materials
  2. For the Walsh Scholarship, highlight passion for news editing, language, and journalism
  3. Complete and submit the official scholarship application form online
  4. Submit all required materials by the November 15 deadline
  5. Await review and selection by the ACES Scholarship Committee
