The ASPET Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow (SURF) Awards introduce undergraduate students to pharmacology research. Our goal is to use authentic, mentored research experiences in pharmacology to heighten student interest in careers in research and related health care disciplines.
Scholarship Details
- $4,600 stipend provided for a minimum of 10 weeks of full-time research
- Funding is awarded to the student's institution and must be used for stipend or housing
- Mentor must be an ASPET member in good standing and sponsor the student for ASPET undergraduate membership
- No indirect costs or additional institutional overhead will be covered
- Award notifications are sent by March 15th
Eligibility Criteria
- Undergraduate students enrolled full-time at a degree-granting institution
- Students must not graduate before completing the summer fellowship
- Students conducting pharmacology-related research with ASPET-member mentors
- Applicants must be at institutions without an active ASPET SURF program
- Mentors may apply with multiple students but only one award per mentor will be granted
Application Process
- Mentor prepares and submits the full application by the deadline
- Include a mentor letter describing the research project, student qualifications, mentoring plan, and enrichment activities
- Submit the mentor’s NIH biosketch with training contributions noted
- Student submits a 500-word statement explaining interest in the project and how it supports their career goals
- Attach student’s undergraduate transcripts (student copies acceptable)
- Provide student’s contact information and institutional payee details
- Applications are submitted via ASPET’s online application portal
Undergraduate students conducting pharmacology-related research including, but not limited to, students representing departments of pharmacology, toxicology, pharmaceutical sciences, and/or biological chemistry are encouraged to apply for this program. Applications from those traditionally underrepresented in the biomedical sciences are particularly encouraged.
