Scholarship Description

The William B. Ruggles Journalism Scholarship honors Texas journalist William B. Ruggles, who coined the phrase “Right to Work” and supported the movement’s advancement. This scholarship is awarded each year to a student who demonstrates a commitment to Right to Work principles and high journalistic standards.

Scholarship Details

  • One $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually
  • The scholarship payment is made directly to the institution of higher learning attended by the recipient
  • Applications run annually from September 1st to December 31st

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be seeking to attend or currently attending a United States institution of higher learning at the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Applicants must either be enrolled or planning to enroll in a journalism program or demonstrate journalistic skills through actual journalistic work, which may include social media
  • Applicants must demonstrate writing ability and an understanding of Right to Work principles and the economic and social problems associated with compulsory unionism

Application Process

  1. Write an original 500 to 700-word essay demonstrating your interest in and knowledge of Right to Work principles and the economic and social problems associated with compulsory unionism
  2. Obtain either your acceptance letter or most recent transcript for submission to the National Institute for Labor Relations Research, or arrange for your school to send the document to the Institute on your behalf
  3. Complete the formal online scholarship application
  4. Attach your essay, transcript or acceptance letter, photo and any additional required documentation to the online application
  5. The winner must submit an official transcript at the end of the academic year for which the scholarship funds are disbursed

The William B. Ruggles Journalism Scholarship provides an opportunity for students to highlight their writing abilities, journalistic skills and academic potential. Students with an interest in journalism and knowledge of Right to Work principles are encouraged to prepare a thoughtful and well-researched essay.
