The CHS Fellowships in Hellenic Studies support high-quality research on topics related to ancient Greek civilization across numerous different fields. Fellows may pursue independent or collaborative research projects and receive financial and professional support during their fellowship.
Scholarship Details
- Welcomes independent and collaborative research projects, including co-written or co-edited works, digital databases and software tools
- Fellowships are available for up to sixteen weeks in the fall, up to sixteen weeks in the spring, or a full academic year
- Sixteen-week fellowships provide a stipend of up to $25,000, while full-year fellowships provide a stipend of up to $52,500
- Fellows receive housing at the CHS and subsidized health insurance
- Additional support is available for professional travel and research expenses, up to $1,500 for fall or spring fellows and up to $3,000 for full-year fellows
- The CHS assists with travel expenses to and from Washington, DC
- All fellows receive a one-year appointment beginning in July with full access to Harvard library system resources
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must hold a PhD in Classics or a related field
- Applicants must have defended their doctoral degree before July 1st
- Applicants should be pursing studies in fields such as archaeology, history, literary criticism, philosophy and interdisciplinary studies
- Applicants may not apply to both the Fellowships in Hellenic Studies Program in Washington, DC and the Early Career Fellowships in Hellenic Studies Program in Greece and Cyprus during the same application cycle
- Individuals who have previously held the Fellowship in Hellenic Studies or the Institute of Historical Research-CHS Joint Fellowship are normally ineligible for either program in the future
Application Process
- Prepare a detailed research proposal of no more than 1,000 words, excluding bibliographies and references
- Prepare a curriculum vitae documenting your qualifications to conduct the proposed research
- Prepare a sample of published or forthcoming work of no more than 10,000 words, excluding bibliographies and references
- Upload the research proposal, curriculum vitae and writing sample as PDF documents through the CHS application system
- Provide the names and contact information of two references
- Confirm the availability of your proposed references before submitting the application
- Submit the completed application, after which the CHS application system will contact the references to request their letters
