Scholarship Description

Applications for the Thunen Memorial Scholarship may be submitted by full-time students who desire to study illumination as a career. Applications for the Thunen Memorial Scholarship may be made by those who will be a junior, senior or graduate student in an accredited four year college or university located in Northern California, Nevada, Oregon or Washington.

Scholarship Details

  • Supports students pursuing careers in illumination and lighting-related fields
  • At least two scholarships are expected to be awarded each academic year
  • Each scholarship award is valued at $2,500
  • Supports study in a wide range of lighting disciplines, including architectural, commercial, residential, theatrical, television, airport, navigational, agricultural, vision, and related fields
  • Application deadline is April 1 each year
  • Scholarship recipients are typically announced by mid-May

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student
  • Must be entering junior or senior undergraduate standing or enrolled as a graduate student
  • Must attend an accredited four-year college or university located in Northern California, Nevada, Oregon, or Washington
  • Must intend to pursue a career in illumination or a lighting-related profession
  • Must submit all required application materials by the published deadline

Application Process

  1. Complete the Thunen Memorial Scholarship application
  2. Prepare a statement of purpose describing your educational goals and interest in the field of lighting
  3. Arrange for at least three letters of recommendation
  4. Ensure that at least one recommendation is provided by a professional or educator working in the lighting field
  5. Submit the completed application and all supporting materials before the April 1 deadline
  6. Review available lighting specialties, including those described in the IES Lighting Handbook, to better understand the profession
  7. Monitor communications regarding scholarship selection and recipient announcements by mid-May

As this scholarship is intended to cover any and all fields of lighting (such as architectural, commercial, residential, airport, navigational, theatrical or television, agricultural, vision and so forth), it is suggested that applicants review the IES Lighting Handbook in order to comprehend fully the available fields of study.
