The James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photojournalists awards scholarships to photographers and videographers at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate school levels. A variety of scholarships are available; the maximum award value is $2,500. High school winners will receive digital cameras rather than a monetary prize.
Scholarship Details
- College-level and graduate school scholarships are paid directly to recipients' schools
- High school scholarships are awarded in the form of digital cameras and equipment for each recipient
- Awards are available for videography and still photography; eligibility varies
- The focus of all entries is photojournalism; "art" photography should not be entered
- Typically, 5 high school awards, 5 undergraduate scholarships, and 1 graduate scholarship are awarded
Eligibility Criteria
- U.S. citizen
- At least one semester of school remaining
- High school and undergraduate applicants must have completed one full year of courses
- Graduate students must be enrolled in photojournalism-related programs
- All applicants must have course experience in photography and/or photojournalism
- High school applicants may not enter video submissions
Application Process
- Complete the online application form with all required documents, including:
- Essay, 250 word maximum
- 2 letters of reference
- Academic transcripts
- Financial data
- Parental release form (for those under 18)
- Upload either 5 still images or 2 videos (3 minute maximum, college applicants only)
- Title all documents in accordance with the Foundation's guidelines
- Ensure image and/or video dimensions and size align with the Foundation's guidelines
- Submit all application materials in advance of the deadline
These scholarships were established to memorialize James "Jim" Alan Cox, an Arizona-based photojournalist and well-loved family man who passed away in 2007.
