Scholarship Description

The California Student Aid Commission offers the Cal Grant Competitive Awards for students who are ineligible for the Cal Grant Entitlement Awards. Maximum amount varies.

Scholarship Details

  • Need-based and competitive
  • 13,000 awards provided each year
  • 2 types, A and B, available

Eligibility Criteria

  • Meet general Cal Grant requirements
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Not awarded a Cal Grant Entitlement award
  • Attending an eligible California university
  • For Cal Grant A:

    • Low to middle income
    • High school minimum GPA of 3.0, college 2.40
    • Enrolled in a program of at least 2 years in length
    • Applicable to tuition and fees
  • For Cal Grant B:

    • Low income
    • Blanket minimum GPA of 2.0
    • Enrolled in a program of at least 1 year in length
    • Applicable to tuition, fees, and living expenses

Application Process

  1. Complete the FAFSA (or CA Dream Act Application if ineligible for FAFSA)
  2. Submit it ahead of its deadline and the grant deadline
  3. Submit your GPA as requested

Freshmen will only receive funds for living expenses; sophomores and higher may also receive funds to aid their tuition and fees.
