The World Trade Center (WTC) Scholarship is available to the dependent children and surviving spouses of New Jersey residents who were killed in the September 11, 2001 attack, died as a result of injuries caused by the attacks, died as a result of an illness caused by exposure to the attack site, or were declared missing and officially presumed dead as a result of the attacks.
Scholarship Details
- Available to eligible dependent children and surviving spouses of qualifying New Jersey residents affected by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks
- May provide support for up to five semesters of an eligible two-year degree program
- May provide support for up to eight semesters of an eligible four-year degree program
- The scholarship amount is determined annually
- Awards may not exceed the institution's charges for tuition, fees, room, and board
- Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress
- Awards may not exceed the maximum number of payments permitted by the program
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be the dependent child or surviving spouse of an eligible New Jersey resident who died or was killed as a result of the September 11, 2001 attacks
- Eligibility may also extend to dependents or surviving spouses of individuals who died from injuries or qualifying illnesses caused by the attacks or exposure to the attack sites
- Eligibility may include dependents or surviving spouses of individuals declared missing and officially presumed dead as a result of the attacks
- Must meet the program's eligibility requirements for college enrollment and financial assistance
- Dependent-child eligibility is generally limited based on the student's high school graduation date and the date of the parent's death
Application Process
- Complete the World Trade Center Scholarship application through the New Jersey Financial Aid Management System.
- Complete the required New Jersey state financial aid application.
- Provide proof that the deceased parent or spouse was a New Jersey resident on September 11, 2001.
- Submit an original or certified copy of the death certificate or an acceptable copy of the original or certified document.
- Provide a letter from the deceased parent or spouse's physician stating the cause of death when required.
- Provide documentation showing that the deceased parent or spouse was registered with an appropriate state or federal program, such as the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund or an eligible World Trade Center health or medical monitoring program.
- Submit all required documentation according to the scholarship program's instructions.
The scholarship supports eligible students attending a college or university for up to five semesters of a two-year degree program or up to eight semesters of a four-year degree program. The scholarship amount is determined each year and will not exceed the amount of tuition, fees, room and board charged at an institution.
