The Native American Student Award provides grants to qualifying Native American students to help cover costs pertaining to higher education. Separate grants are available for undergraduate and graduate students studying anthropology, archaeology or Native American Studies.
Scholarship Details
- Provides one or more grants of up to $1,000 each
- Award funds may be used for tuition, books, room and board or other educational expenses
- Funds are administered by the recipient’s academic department
- Students may receive the award once as an undergraduate and once as a graduate student
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be Native American, including Métis, and must provide proof of enrolled tribal membership with a federally recognized Native American, First Nations, Hawaiian or Alaskan tribe
- Applicants must be full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate students studying anthropology, archaeology or Native American Studies
- Undergraduate applicants may attend any four-year college or university in the United States or Canada that provides specific coursework or research covering Great Plains anthropology or Native American Studies
- Undergraduate applicants must describe relevant coursework or research they have completed in their letter of interest or application
- Graduate applicants must be conducting research related to some aspect of the Great Plains
- Graduate research may be broadly applicable or topical as long as it has a defined connection to Great Plains research topics
Application Process
- Prepare a student resume or vita if applying as a graduate student or a list of past and present coursework if applying as an undergraduate student
- Obtain a letter of recommendation from a faculty member that focuses on your accomplishments or potential in the field of anthropology
- Prepare a photocopy of your tribal enrollment certificate or equivalent documentation of tribal membership or enrollment, such as a Certificate of Degree of Indian or Alaskan Blood
- Undergraduate applicants should include a description of relevant coursework or research related to Great Plains anthropology or Native American Studies
- Submit the required documents to the Native American Student Award Committee Chair by October 9th at 11:59 pm EST. Applications may be submitted electronically or in writing
- Wait for the committee to select one or more recipients and announce its decision at the Annual Meeting of the Plains Anthropological Society
