  • Scholarship Description
  • A college education is already a major financial challenge for most American families, but it becomes infinitely more difficult for a student when a parent dies, leaving little or no life insurance. Recognizing the character and perseverance that so many young people show in the face of such adversity, Life Happens sponsors the annual Life Lessons Scholarship Program for college students and college-bound high school seniors. Qualified entrants who submit essays or videos about how the death of a parent impacted their lives are eligible for scholarship money.

The Life Lessons Scholarship Program is open only to legal residents of the fifty United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, who are between 17 and 24 years of age, have experienced the death of a parent or legal guardian, and are currently enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a college, university or trade school within the fifty United States, the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico. Employees of Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (“Life Happens” or “Sponsor”), KWT Global, and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, and advertising, and promotion agencies, and any such employee’s immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling and their respective spouses) and those living in their same households, whether or not related, are not eligible to enter or win a scholarship.

This scholarship would change my college life and severely help me financially! I'm yet to apply for the scholarship because this is sooooo hard for me to write! I lost my father (My Superman) a chemical engineer and hazmat emergency worker due to colon cancer in 2015 after a five-year battle. My mother did everything she could to help save his life, using every dime saved and becoming his full-time caregiver. Stopping her life to save him and our family. My dad was a workaholic, he worked for a company called, EQ Environmental Quality Inc, which did nothing to help then nor after my father's passing. My dad waited for forty years to have his only child and son. He was a hard worker who saved many lives and I would love to have him here with me to see that I'm working hard to keep my promise and my end of our manly bargain. To do my best including going and completing a college career and becoming the first male to graduate. Devastated with a shattered heart, I/we lost our "Superman". I made my dad (parents) a promise to always do my best. I guess this is the start of beginning this Scholarship...I'm going to apply right now! Thanks in advance for allowing us to post comments and giving a jump start!

Hello my name is Jadaya Asor-Sallaah. I attend a 4 year university and my major is in nursing. I am student that try’s very hard in school and my gpa is a 4.0 . Unfortunately my mom passed away during my senior year in 2020 . My mom passed away from cancer and sadly didn’t see me get my high school diploma or to see attend my first year at college. This scholarship would mean everything to me. As a student with one parent anything will help . By getting the change to apply for this scholarship will be amazing and very much appreciated.

To say that I am interested in this scholarship is a complete understatement. This opportunity is one that I would testify about. When everything seemed hopeless, I found myself googling scholarships and God led me to this page. My mom passed away when I was in grade 10. Since then, it have been my dad, my three other siblings and myself. Things are not easy. We are barely staying afloat. It feels as though we are in a sinking sand; going under and under and under. I just got an email from my institution reminding me of the tuition to be paid and I don’t have the first dollar. I can’t see where it will come from. I’m more than desperate. I don’t think that I can find the right adjectives to describe how much I’m in need. If there was a way for you to search my heart then that’s how you’d truly understand my need for this opportunity. My mere words are not enough. My dad’s job is basically hand to mouth and he only work 3 days a week. My mom did not have any insurance so he had to bare the cost of her death on his own. This has affected me emotionally because at least if my mom was here and I was in this crisis I’d have her to whisper "everything will be okay" with her small, still voice. After her death I felt as though I would give up on my dreams because mine was also hers, but I kept fighting and pushing through until I made it to the last semester of third year. Only 1 year to go after completing this semester to make it through. I’ve come this far by faith and I can’t give up now. I refuse to let all the sacrifices, the sleepless nights, and every tear go down the drain. All I need is your help to continue pursing my dream. Helping me will also eliminate one of the many burdens off my dad.

My father was diagnosed with brain cancer when I was in 3rd grade and he lost his battle with this horrific disease when I was in 7th grade. Both my parents were hardworking blue collar workers. My mom a teacher and my dad worked evening security and his second job was as a handyman. My parents did not have life insurance and his sickness and disability and later death took a tremendous toll on our families ability to make ends meet. We have struggled ever since. I have aspirations to be go to medical school and financially this can not happen with out assistance.

The scholarship would help my mother and I greatly. My father had passed away when I was about 11 and my mother is a single mother of 3 kids. I plan on attend college to be a nurse and that's a lot of money for nursing school. By having this opportunity to apply for this scholarship is truly a blessing.

I lost my dad when I was 16. He passed due to years of drug abuse. I am wanting to apply for this scholarship because my dream was to go to college and better myself and help others with the same struggles as I had. I grew up with my mom, who worked all the time to try to provide for me and help in anyway she could. This scholarship would help me so much!

This would help me with my schooling because I had lost my biological parents before the age of 15. I have to pay for my own college now and I’m struggling to pay that so this grant would help me so much. I just want to be able to make my parents proud of me. I would believe I am eligible for this since I lost my parents before the age of 15 because of drugs. I hope I am picked because I am indeed of serious help. I only have a part time job to help me for school.

I applied for this scholarship because I lost my mother to cervical cancer. She was a single-mother and supported me and my brothers on her own. She didn't have life insurance but she instilled a massive amount of strength in me to pursue my dream even without her.

This would really help me with finishing school since my father passed away I've had to pay for all of college out of my pocket that I worked hard for and having this scholarship would really relief some of the financial struggle I have trying to pay for school.

Miracle A Dykes  on 2/5/2020 7:04:30 AM

I am very interested in this scholarship because it can help me share my story to others as a inspirational to many people.

Emily L  on 1/24/2020 9:00:30 AM

This is exactly the type of scholarship I've been looking for. My dad passed last year from cancer and it's still heartbreaking. Not only has it hurt my family emotionally, we've also been struggling financially since he was the sole breadwinner. FAFSA doesn't seem to relent at all since they still count his past income and our social security checks as money we can spend on college.

Salenia G  on 10/2/2019 6:09:36 PM

I was wondering if you could apply for this essay even if your parent didn’t die but if one of your parents almost died an was in a coma an has brain damage an will be a kid for the rest of his life I was wondering if I could use that as a life lesson for this type of essay

Gerald  on 7/4/2019 1:49:41 AM

I need this scholarship because my Grandmother has been taking care of me and my brother. she works three jobs trying to make ends me. she has put her life on hold to raise me and my brother. I would love to take the stress off of her because my grandmother didn't have to take me and my brother in but she did and that is why Im grateful to the Lord for giving me a wonderful grandmother that loves me and my brother.
