  • Scholarship Description
  • The prestigious McConnell Scholarships are reserved for 10 Kentucky graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership potential. Scholarships are renewable for a total of four years.

    Scholarship amounts will be determined by the selections committee, but typically will include full tuition and a stipend for books at the University of Louisville. In addition, each scholar will receive all-expenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C., and a five-week study abroad to the People's Republic of China.

    The McConnell Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who are Kentucky residents with a minimum 3.35 GPA. Applicants must have demonstrated a capacity for intellectual and public leadership.

    Note: McConnell Scholars must minor in political science at the University of Louisville and maintain programmatic requirements to keep their scholarships.

    Applicants must write an essay (not to exceed 500 words) - Consider the following quotation from The Autobiography of Harry S Truman: "Readers of good books, particularly books of biography and history, are preparing themselves for leadership. Not all readers become leaders. But all leaders must be readers."

"OK to Be White" Signs a "Sign of the Times"?

"It's okay to be white" signs were scattered on college campuses across the country, as well as in Canada over the past week. Reportedly, the signs were first suggested on an online chat forum called 4chan, calling on people to place posters in their area on Halloween night. At Harvard Law School, at least 20 handmade stickers with the message "It's ok to be white" were posted on light poles and electrical boxes. Harvard Law's Dean of Students Marcia Sells condemned the posters, stating the posters and stickers are "intended to divide us from one another" and that "HLS will not let that happen here." The Department of Public Works removed the stickers shortly thereafter. Even after they had been removed, the message continued to circulate via social media through hashtags and videos, gaining both condemnation and support. [...]
