Scholarship Description

Six $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors of color (African American, Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American) who identify as agnostic, atheist, humanist, freethinker, and/or secular. The scholarship aims to promote the work of black skeptics, freethinkers, atheists, agnostics, and secular humanists through community outreach, education, and social justice initiatives. Students who are (or have been) in foster care, homeless, undocumented, disabled, and/or LGBTQI+ are encouraged to apply.

Scholarship Details

  • Six $5,000 scholarships available for graduating high school seniors.
  • Applicants must identify as agnostic, atheist, humanist, freethinker, and/or secular.
  • Scholarships are open to African American, Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American students.
  • Students who have experienced foster care, homelessness, undocumented status, disability, and/or identify as LGBTQI+ are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Preference given to students who are the first in their families to attend college.
  • Applicants must have a record of service to and participation in school and/or community-based organizations.
  • Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from an advisor or teacher.
  • Applicants must provide proof of admission to a two-year or four-year college.

Application Process

  1. Write a two-paragraph essay (500–700 words) addressing the following prompt:
    • Why do you identify as non-religious/secular, and what humanist issue(s) are you passionate about addressing in your community?
    • How might secular humanism create positive social change?
    • What specific issues or causes have you addressed in your community that could be characterized as humanist?
  2. Obtain a letter of recommendation from an advisor or teacher (can include information about participation in school or community-based organizations).
  3. Provide a copy of your college admission letter to a two- or four-year college.
  4. Submit all required documents before the June deadline. Incomplete or late applications will be disqualified.
