  • Scholarship Description
  • The Law Student Assistance Fund may assist one or more students from Shelby County, Ohio and the surrounding counties abutting on Shelby County, Ohio in their final (third) year of law school (current second-year students approaching third year) by providing assistance to defray the cost of tuition, books and such other expenses incident to attending law school. Students must have a permanent residence in Shelby County, Ohio or counties abutting Shelby Co., Ohio at the time the award is made; have demonstrated leadership in community, school, and church; graduated from a high school in Shelby County or from a high school located in a county abutting Shelby County; demonstrated above-average legal scholarship while attending law school and have a demonstrated financial need. Preference shall be given to students who indicate a desire for the general practice of law in a rural or county-seat setting and to third-year law students who are married and have children. Student Loan Debt Forgiveness for U.S. Military Veterans

The U.S. Department of Education plans to forgive $1.3 billion in outstanding student loan debt for roughly 25,000 disabled U.S. military veterans, beginning in July. Until now, the Department of Education had required veterans to formally apply for student loan forgiveness - having them complete "unnecessary paperwork to secure relief from their student loans, even after the Department of Veterans Affairs had found that a veteran met the legal requirements for disability-related loan forgiveness." In 2018, over 30,000 totally and permanently disabled veterans eligible for student loan forgiveness had not completed the necessary paperwork; a majority of which had defaulted on their student loans.
