The Charles Shelton Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide educational scholarships to African-American students pursuing a degree in veterinarian medicine or veterinarian technology.
Scholarship Details
- Two $2,000 scholarships are offered annually
- Awards are non-renewable
- Scholarship funds are paid directly to the recipient's educational institution
- Awards are distributed in split disbursements on September 1st and January 1st
- Recipients must provide proof of enrollment by August 31st
- In the event of a tie, the scholarship may be split between the top two applicants
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a Black African-American graduating high school senior, current college student, or returning college student
- Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must be a legal U.S. resident
- Must reside in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia
- Must provide proof of full-time enrollment in an eligible college or university
- Must demonstrate experience or interest in veterinary medicine or veterinary technology
Application Process
- Complete the Veterinary Scholarship Form.
- Submit an official academic transcript in a sealed envelope.
- Provide a resume detailing achievements, honors, community service, and school involvement.
- Provide two professional references addressing your experience in veterinary medicine or technology. High school applicants must include one reference from a STEM professor, while post-secondary applicants must include one from their current veterinary college.
- Provide proof of full-time enrollment in the appropriate college, university, or accredited veterinary college.
- High school applicants must submit a 500- to 750-word essay discussing the benefits and concerns associated with administering treatments to research animals that advance human and veterinary medicine but may cause animals pain or discomfort.
- Post-secondary applicants must submit an essay of at least 1,500 words addressing the same laboratory animal medicine and research topic.
- Submit the completed application and all required supporting materials according to the Foundation's application instructions.
Once the scholarship recipients have enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education and submitted proof of enrollment to the sponsor, the scholarships will be awarded in the form of a check made payable to the institution attended by the scholarship recipient.
