  • Scholarship Description
  • The SAWF Scholarship Program, introduced in 2011, provides financial assistance to women enrolled or enrolling in a STEM field at an accredited two-year technical program, four-year undergraduate program, or graduate program hopefully to be used for a career in the automotive industry. The amount of each scholarship is dependent upon the number of applicants and generally ranges from $500 to $5,000 each.

    Scholarships are usually announced in August and January for use during the upcoming academic year. Scholarship payments are made in two increments, each at the start of the applicable academic term. Eligibility requirements, listed below, must be maintained in order to receive the full scholarship amount.

    Eligibility:
    -Female high school senior or graduate. Applicants may submit applications before graduating from high school or receiving a GED
    -Enrolled or enrolling in a college or university in any of the following Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia
    -Enrolled or enrolling in an accredited higher education institution
    -Minimum GPA requirements: cumulative: 2.5 and major: 3.0 (must be maintained)
    -Full-time or part-time (at least 6 hours per semester) enrollment in at least 2 consecutive academic
    terms.
    -Degree being pursued in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or Automotive Field
    -Interest in considering or already pursuing a career in an automotive related field

Yale to Ditch "Freshman", "Upperclassmen", Adopt Gender-Neutral Terms

In an effort to modernize, Yale will no longer use the terms "freshman" and "underclassmen" and will instead adopt gender-neutral terminology, such as "first-year" and "upper-level students." University officials still anticipate students and faculty to use the old terminology, since they're "deeply ingrained in our everyday language and in Yale's history."

The new terminology can be found in the Undergraduate Regulations and the First-Year Handbook and is expected to appear in all Yale College's publications and communications by the start of the 2018-2019 academic year. The effort to phase out the older terminology is "a piece of a larger movement to reflect the diversity of college campuses" and also in part because the "two words in particular are gendered," according to Jennifer Keup, Director Of the National Resource for the First-Year-Experience and students in Transition.
