Sallie Mae’s charitable fund announced recently a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the nation’s largest organization supporting the Black college community, to offer over $3 million in scholarships over the next three years to minority students and students from underserved populations. Sallie Mae may be known for student loans, but these scholarships will be freely awarded money so students can achieve their higher education dreams without taking on student debt.

The new Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program contains three different scholarship. Two are open for applications from today until March 8th, 2021. The first, the Bridging the Dream Scholarship for High School Seniors, will award $10,000 to 25 high school seniors enrolling in a two-year or four-year college, or vocational or technical school. The award is intended for students from diverse backgrounds or who belong to underserved communities who are also Pell Grant eligible, meaning they have among the highest levels of financial need. The second award, the Completing the Dream Gap Scholarship Program, is for students currently working towards a college degree who are at risk of not completing their studies due to financial hardships. The final scholarship will be aimed at graduate students, to open later this year.

The three new scholarship programs are just part of Sallie Mae’s $4.5 million commitment to increase access to education for first-generation, low-income and minority students. The company will invest an additional $1.5 million to support educational programs that promote equality, diversity, social justice and inclusion.
