Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, the eight-day festival of lights celebrated each winter by Jewish families. During Hanukkah, menorahs are lit, latkes are fried, dreidels are spun and chocolate coins are eaten. If you’re celebrating Hanukkah this year, take some time to apply to these eight Jewish scholarships – one for each night! You’ll give yourself a chance to win a “present” of free financial aid for college.

Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award

Award Amount: $36,000
Deadline: January 8, 2021
Scholarship Description: The Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards honor Jewish teens who demonstrate remarkable leadership and engagement in community service projects that embody the values of tikkun olam – “repairing the world.” Up to 15 recipients will be awarded $36,000 each to further their project or for their education.

JVS Chicago Scholarship Program

Award Amount: Varies
Deadline: February 1, 2021
Scholarship Description: JVS Chicago offers scholarships to Jewish students residing in the Chicago metropolitan area (including Lake County, Indiana) who are juniors, seniors or graduate students studying for a helping profession.

Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh Central Scholarships

Award Amount: Varies
Deadline: February 9, 2021
Scholarship Description: The JSS helps local Jewish high school seniors or students enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or technical school with demonstrated financial need.

Dallas Jewish Community Foundation Scholarships

Award Amount: Varies
Deadline: February 11, 2021
Scholarship Description: There are 37 different funds from the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation and the Southwest Community Foundation that can award more than 50 scholarships in the coming year.

Morris J. and Betty Kaplun Foundation Essay Contest

Award Amount: $1,800
Deadline: March 7, 2021
Scholarship Description: The Morris J. and Betty Kaplun Foundation seeks to encourage young people to treasure our Jewish heritage, reflect on our Jewish values, and better understand our contribution to civilization and culture. To this effort, the Foundation sponsors an annual essay contest open to high school students.

Jewish Community Federation College Scholarships

Deadline: March 31, 2021
Scholarship Description: The Jewish Community Federation provides scholarships for students to attend undergraduate or graduate programs at accredited nonprofit colleges or universities. Most (but not all) scholarships are for Jewish students from the Federation's service area, which includes the counties of San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Marin, Napa, and Sonoma, to attend an undergraduate program based on a combination of need and merit.

The Lentin Scholarship Fund

Award Amount: $10,000
Deadline: April 15, 2021
Scholarship Description: The Lentin Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for high school juniors and seniors who have completed secondary school and who are enrolling in full-time undergraduate degree programs or vocational programs at accredited nonprofit colleges or universities. Applicants must have permanent residence (graduating from area high school) in the St. Louis metropolitan area and must demonstrate financial need.

The JSSA Educational Scholarship Fund

Award Amount: $6,000
Deadline: April 24, 2021
Scholarship Description: Scholarships are awarded annually to a high school senior from the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area who has completed significant volunteer services within the local Jewish community in addition to high school graduation service requirements.
