Do you know an outstanding young leader whose service work has made a significant impact? Every year since 2001, the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors 25 extraordinary students between the ages of 8 and 18 who have made a substantial, positive impact on their communities and the environment. Applicants must be currently working on an inspiring service project or have done so within the past year. The Barron Prize only accepts applications from individuals, and not from large groups of young people. Fifteen of the top recipients will each win a $10,000 cash award to support their public service efforts or higher education endeavors, as well as a personalized plaque and certificate. Winners will also be given exclusive networking and media coverage opportunities, including print, television, and radio to spread awareness of their work.
The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes was founded by T.A. Barron, a New York Times bestselling author of children’s, teen, and nature books. Barron’s most famous publications include the 12-book series, The Merlin Saga. While establishing this program, he commented, “Nothing is more inspiring than stories about heroic people who have truly made a difference to the world…and we need our heroes today more than ever. Not celebrities, but heroes – people whose character can inspire us all. That is the purpose of the Gloria Barron Prize: to shine the spotlight on these amazing young people so that their stories will inspire others.”
Over the past 20+ years, the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes has given more than half a million dollars to hundreds of young heroes who represent the rich diversity of America. Many organizations support this program, namely the National Youth Leadership Council, Girl Scouts, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, and The Wilderness Society.
