Derrick Rose is looking to help three worthy students live out their college dreams through his Rose Scholars Program by offering awards ranging from $20,000 to $200,000. Although Rose wasn't much of a student, he "hope(s) to provide students a path to college that was not previously available to them."

Rose, who became the youngest MVP in league history in 2011 with the Bulls, is offering more than $400,000 in college scholarships through the program. The program is designed to rewards students who are "civically minded and demonstrate a willingness to lead." According to Rose, "investing in school-age youth has long been a passion of mine, and I am proud to continue to help children pursue higher education as a means to better themselves and their communities."

The Rose Scholars Program is open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are civic-minded and have an instinct to lead. One grand scholarship winner will receive up to $200,000, paid out $25,000 per semester for four years; there will also be two scholarships for up to $20,000 awarded to the runner-ups. In order to apply, applicants must write an essay of fewer than 600 words and create a social media post proving their worth as a leader in their communities by the September 30 deadline. Winners will be announced on October 15.

The announcement of the Rose Scholars Program came two days after Lebron James opened an elementary school for at-risk kids in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. James' "I Promise" school gives its students: free tuition, free uniforms, free breakfast, lunch and snacks, a free bicycle and helmet, access to a food pantry for their family, and guaranteed tuition for all - guaranteed by the University of Akron. Furthermore, parents of students will also receive access to job placement services an help acquiring their GEDs.
