Scholarship Description

The AALA Gene Henson Scholarship, a 501(c)(3) organization, sponsors a $5,000 Scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding senior enrolled in one of our local high schools who is interested in attending one of Georgia's accredited higher learning institutions. Seniors attending public or not for profit high schools are eligible to participate.

Scholarship Details

  • Total scholarship award is $5,000, disbursed in two payments of $2,500
  • Must maintain a GPA of 3.0 to receive the second installment
  • Applications are sent to metro Atlanta school counselors annually
  • Each counselor may nominate two eligible students

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be a high school senior attending a public or non-profit high school in metro Atlanta
  • Must be accepted to and plan to attend an accredited college or university in Georgia
  • Must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need
  • Must participate in an interview with the scholarship committee
  • Must provide a letter of recommendation from a school advisor

Application Process

  1. Be nominated by your school counselor (each school may nominate two students)
  2. Prepare and submit the required documents:
    • High school transcripts
    • Official SAT or ACT scores
    • Letter of recommendation
    • Completed application form
    • Letter of acceptance from a Georgia college or university
    • Signed statement of non-affiliation
    • Financial documents including W2s
  3. Write and submit a 750-word essay on a topic provided by the scholarship committee
  4. Participate in an interview with members of the Gene Henson Scholarship Committee
  5. If selected, maintain a 3.0 GPA to receive the second installment of the award

The Gene Henson Scholarship Foundation was formed in 2004 in response to the chapter’s desire to provide secondary educational opportunities to well deserving students in metro Atlanta.The foundation is named after the AALA’s founding member, Gene Henson. The first scholarship was awarded to Andrei Ionescu in 2005.
