Scholarship Description

The ABF Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program allows undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds who are considering careers in the field of law or social science to gain a hands-on learning experience for eight weeks during the summer.

Scholarship Details

  • Eight-week summer research fellowship at the American Bar Foundation in Chicago
  • Fellows work one-on-one with ABF Research Professors on sociolegal research
  • Weekly seminars on law and social science topics
  • Visits to law firms, courts, and social justice organizations
  • All program costs covered, including stipend and travel for accepted fellows

Eligibility Criteria

  • Undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in law and social science
  • Must be seriously considering a career in law, legal policy, or social science
  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents preferred
  • Must be available to participate full-time for the entire program duration during the summer

Application Process

  1. Prepare academic transcript and résumé
  2. Request two letters of recommendation from faculty or mentors
  3. Write a personal statement explaining your interest in law or social science and your career goals
  4. Complete the online application form on the ABF website during the open application window
  5. Submit all materials by the published deadline

Established in 1988, the SURF program promotes broader inclusion in the legal profession by breaking down barriers often experienced by individuals from diverse backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.
