Americans Against Gun Violence is pleased to announce that our National High School Essay Contest is now open for student entries. We’ll be awarding at least $15,000 in total scholarships again this year distributed among 12 winners, with the option of giving additional awards, as we’ve done in most past years, if there are more than 12 outstanding essays. The deadline for students to enter the contest is 11:59 PM in the student’s own time zone on April 20th.
Scholarship Details
- Total Scholarships: At least $15,000
- 12 winners to be selected initially
- Additional awards possible for outstanding essays
Eligibility Criteria
- High school students in good standing in the United States or its territories
- High school seniors who will graduate this year
- Essays must be written by students themselves, in their own words
- Students under 18 must have parental or legal guardian consent to enter
- Only one essay per student is allowed
Application Process
- Write an original essay of 500 words or fewer
- Essay should address the provided essay contest prompt regarding the Supreme Court's 2008 Heller decision
- Submit essays and demographic information via the AAGunV Essay Contest Entry Form
- Essays may include titles and footnotes but are not required
- Deadline for submission: 11:59 PM in the student's time zone on April 20th
Only one essay per student will be considered. If a student submits more than one essay, the most recent submission will be the one that is considered. A minimum of twelve contest winners will be selected from the essays submitted.
