The APHA Kaiser Permanente Community Health Fellowship provides an immersive year-long work experience for early-career professionals who have a conferred MPH, DrPH or PhD in public health from one of our partner universities. Fellows receive a $120,000 stipend and other benefits.
Fellowship Details
- One-year fellowship running from September to September
- $120,000 stipend provided; fellows serve as independent contractors
- Includes a one-week virtual orientation and full-time placement at a Kaiser Permanente or partner site
- Benefits include APHA membership, monthly virtual leadership sessions, APHA Annual Meeting travel stipend, and career coaching
- Placement sites include Kaiser Permanente departments focused on policy, evaluation, Medi-Cal initiatives, community health, and Food is Medicine programs
Eligibility Criteria
- Must hold an MPH, DrPH, or PhD in public health from a partner university
- Must be an early-career professional in community health
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Degree must be conferred within the stated timeline

- Preference given to applicants with public health or healthcare experience, leadership involvement, and individuals from underrepresented or historically marginalized communities
Application Process
- Confirm eligibility based on degree, timeline, citizenship status, and partner-school affiliation
- Prepare application materials including resume, personal statements, transcripts, and supporting documents as outlined in the fellowship announcement
- Submit the online application by the posted deadline once the competition opens in December 2025
- Participate in the preliminary review process conducted by public and community health experts in February
- Attend a virtual interview with APHA and Kaiser Permanente selection committee members if selected as a semi-finalist in March
- Interview with fellowship placement sites virtually in April if chosen as a finalist
- Await final decisions, which are announced in May
As a fellow, you will support and lead projects, programs and partnerships to address upstream determinants of health across Kaiser Permanente-served communities. Focus areas may include housing and homelessness, food security, economic opportunity, education, racism and related trauma, environmental health and sustainability, and access to healthcare services.
