Scholarship Description

The Richard Eaton Foundation Award is a scholarship administered by the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) to support students pursuing studies in electronic media. The scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate academic achievement and a commitment to the media profession. Recipients are selected through BEA's annual scholarship program.

Scholarship Details

  • Award amount of $4,000

  • Scholarship funds are awarded during the following summer

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a junior, senior, or graduate student during the scholarship year
  • Must attend a BEA member institution
  • Must be pursuing studies in an area of electronic media

Application Process

  1. Create a BEA profile and account before beginning the application
  2. Obtain a complimentary membership code from your faculty advisor or by contacting BEA if you are an undergraduate at a BEA institutional member school
  3. If you are a graduate student, contact BEA to verify whether your institution includes graduate membership
  4. Complete and submit the BEA scholarship application
  5. Submit only one application to be automatically considered for all BEA scholarships for which you are eligible

Richard Eaton was chairman of United Broadcasting Co., which owned and operated 17 radio stations He pioneered black-oriented radio programming in the United States by establishing WOOK in Silver Spring in 1947. He also operated the first Cuban-oriented radio station in Miami and the first Japanese-language TV station in Honolulu. Before launching United Broadcasting, Eaton was a weekly newspaper publisher, a radio news commentator for WINX in Washington, D.C., and a reporter for the Mutual Broadcasting radio network.
