Scholarship Description

Bethesda Lutheran Disability Ministries offers scholarships of up to $3,000 to support Lutheran students preparing for ministry that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These awards aim to equip future leaders—such as pastors, deaconesses, directors of Christian education, and special-needs teachers—with the training needed to share the Gospel and build faith-centered relationships. Scholarships are available to undergraduate juniors and seniors, as well as seminarian and post-graduate students pursuing ministry-related degrees. Each individual may receive this scholarship a maximum of two times.

Scholarship Details

  • Up to $3,000 awarded per recipient
  • Available to undergraduate juniors and seniors, as well as seminarian and post-graduate students
  • Supports ministry-focused degrees such as pastor, pre-seminary, deaconess, special-needs teacher, or director of Christian education
  • Focused on ministry to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Scholarship may be awarded no more than twice to the same individual

Eligibility Criteria

  • Active, communicant member of a Lutheran congregation
  • Undergraduate students must be classified as juniors or seniors at an accredited 4-year college or university
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Career goals must involve ministry with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities

Application Process

  1. Complete the official application form available through Bethesda Lutheran Disability Ministries
  2. Document at least 100 hours of service to individuals with developmental disabilities
  3. Write a 250–350-word essay describing how your academic course of study will support your ministry goals
  4. Submit four letters of recommendation: one from your pastor, one from a professor, and two from non-family members
  5. Provide an official transcript from your college or university
  6. Include photographs of yourself volunteering or interacting with individuals with developmental disabilities (with permission from those pictured)
  7. Optional: Submit any additional materials that help the selection committee get to know you better
