The Dr. Bernard Harris Scholarship Program, in partnership with the Council of the Great City Schools, supports underrepresented high school seniors of color who are committed to pursuing STEM degrees. Named in honor of Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr.—a former astronaut, physician, and businessman—this scholarship empowers students from member districts to achieve their academic and professional goals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Scholarship Details
- Four scholarships of $5,000 each
- Awarded to two Black and two Hispanic high school seniors
- Funds must be used for tuition and related college expenses during the coming academic year
- Recipients selected by Dr. Harris and a committee appointed by the Council of the Great City Schools
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a Black or Hispanic student completing senior year of high school
- Must attend a school in a district that is a member of the Council of the Great City Schools
- Must be accepted for full-time enrollment at a four-year college or university
- Must intend to pursue a STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics)
Application Process
- Confirm your school district is a member of the Council of the Great City Schools
- Complete the scholarship application (available via the Council’s website)
- Provide proof of college acceptance and intended STEM major
- Submit all required materials by the application deadline
- Wait for notification in May if selected; awards are disbursed in June
Bernard Harris is a former astronaut, physician, businessman, and the first African American to walk in space. He served as CEO and Executive Director of the National Math & Science Initiative and led the organization’s efforts to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement in communities across the country.
