The David A. Hicks Scholarship for the Arts is available for application from senior high school students in the Berrien County area. Each year, the scholarship awards at least $1000 to one student, with a preference toward students at David's alma matter, River Valley High School in Three Oaks. Students must have a 2.5 GPA or higher and plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the arts – this includes performing, graphic, digital and fine arts. This scholarship can be used at any U.S. college/university or arts school for tuition, books, fees and other costs related to attending, except room and board.
David valiantly fought cancer throughout most of his teen years. Throughout his illness, he was always more concerned with others than he was with his own comfort. He was very interested in the arts and would have pursued a career in video game design. Because of that, his family established this scholarship to help other students pursue their passion for the arts.
