The Dedman Distinguished Scholars Essay Competition is designed to help Texas high school students improve their communication and writing skills at the college level. The competition emphasizes the importance of effective writing in achieving success in scholarship, leadership, service, and research. Winning essays will be recognized with cash awards and certificates.
Scholarship Details
- First Place: $1,500
- Second Place: $1,000
- Third Place: $500
- Honorable Mention #1: $250
- Honorable Mention #2: $250
- Winners will also receive a certificate of recognition
- Cash awards can be used for any educational institution
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to sophomores and juniors currently enrolled in a public or private high school in Texas
- Essays must be the original work of student entrants
- Only one entry per student per year
- Winners must provide documentation showing enrollment status
- Winners must agree to submit a brief biography for publication
- Winners will need to create a UT EID and provide a payment address
Application Process

- Write an original essay of no more than 4,000 characters (approximately 750–800 words) addressing the following prompt:
- Conviction is often hailed as the courage to stand by one’s beliefs in the face of opposition. But when does conviction become obstinance? In a well-argued and compelling essay, explore the fine line between conviction and obstinance using historical, philosophical, and personal experiences.
- Ensure your essay meets the following judging criteria:
- Adherence to the prompt
- Originality and creativity
- Grammar and mechanics
- Organization and presentation
- Ability to inspire and evoke emotion
- Submit your completed application and essay before the deadline on April 30th
