The Dr. Lee Hoon Scholarship Program, established by Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, Inc. (KCS), supports outstanding Korean American high school seniors as they transition to college. This program honors Dr. Lee Hoon's legacy of education, equity, and community service by providing scholarships to students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to their community.
Scholarship Details
- Three scholarships of $5,000 each awarded annually
- Scholarship funds are sent directly to the recipient's college or university to support tuition expenses
- Awards are based on academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, financial need, and a personal essay
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a current high school senior
- Must be of Korean heritage
- Must reside in New York or New Jersey
- Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Must demonstrate financial need (family income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level)
- Must show a commitment to leadership or volunteer service
Application Process
- Complete the online application form on the KCS website
- Submit resume & unofficial high school transcript
- Most recent parent/guardian IRS Form 1040
- 600-word personal essay responding to one of three prompts
- Submit the completed application and required materials through the KCS online portal
- Check your email for notification of award selection
Dr. Lee Hoon was a dentist from San Francisco, California, whose own education was only possible because of the support of various scholarship programs. Dr. Lee was born in Korea and received his DDS and Ph.D. from Seoul National University before immigrating to the United States in 1973. Dr. Lee was an active member of the Korean-American communities in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City and was committed to giving back to his community.
