The DSEA Christopher K. Smith Memorial Future Teacher Scholarship supports graduating seniors from Delaware high schools who plan to pursue a career in education. Recipients receive scholarship payments upon submitting documentation of expenses incurred during each year of college.
Scholarship Details
- Award amount of $1,000 per year for four years
- Scholarship checks are issued directly to the student
- Selection is based on class rank, SAT scores, school activities during the past four years, awards and honors and career plans
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a graduating senior or graduate of a Delaware public high school
- Must plan to major in education
- Must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average
Application Process
- Obtain two letters of reference from teachers who can discuss your school activities, leadership experience, character, personal qualities and initiative
- Request an official transcript that highlights honors classes and includes class rank, SAT scores, grade point average, and a profile of the grading system
- Write a personal statement of 150 words or less explaining your career plans and interest in pursuing a career in education
- Compile a list of school and community activities from the past four years, including awards, honors and leadership roles
- Submit all required application materials to DSEA according to the application instructions and deadline
- If selected as one of the top five finalists, complete the required essay and participate in a virtual interview in late February
- Await the announcement of the scholarship winner following the finalist interviews
