The Earl Warren Scholarship is named for the Honorable Earl Warren, the 14th Chief Justice of the United States and former Governor of California whose stewardship of the Warren Court helped end school segregation and transform America’s legal landscape.
Scholarship Details
- Provides $15,000 annually for up to three years, totaling $45,000
- Scholarship renewal requires recipients to maintain good academic standing and continue meeting program eligibility criteria
- Supports students preparing for careers in civil rights and public interest law
- Recipients may apply for competitive LDF internships, externships, and guided research projects
- Participation in internships, externships, and research projects is not guaranteed
- Final scholarship decisions are made in mid-August or early September
- All applicants are notified of their application status
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be entering the first or second year of full-time legal study
- Must attend an accredited law school
- Must demonstrate a commitment to racial justice
- Must show outstanding potential for a career in civil rights or public interest law
- Recipients must maintain good academic standing and continue meeting scholarship requirements to receive subsequent annual awards

The adjusted gross family/independent income line of your FAFSA form must be completed with a dollar amount or applicants must include a tax return (parent/guardian income tax return for families; applicant’s tax return if filed as an independent). In addition to financial assistance, Earl Warren Scholars have the unique opportunity to apply for LDF internships, externships, or guided research projects.
