The Barbara C. Harris Scholars Program aims to promote equity in education by providing financial assistance to Blacks, African Americans and Caribbean-Americans, who are African descendants of slavery in the United States.
Scholarship Details
- Supports students of African descent who are descendants of enslaved people in the U.S. or the Caribbean
- Award amount: one-time $5,000 scholarship for college students or comparable support for vocational and trade programs
- Scholarship recipients may qualify for a second-semester award upon maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be Black, African American, and/or Caribbean American
- Must be a direct descendant of African people who were enslaved in the United States or the Caribbean
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Must reside within the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island (Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, or Suffolk)
- Applicants do not have to be Episcopalian to apply
Application Process
- Complete the Barbara C. Harris Scholars Program application form
- Prepare and attach an official high school or college transcript
- Obtain two letters of recommendation from teachers, community leaders, or mentors
- Email all materials by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern) on April 30th
- Await notification of award selection following review by the scholarship committee
One-time college scholarships of $5,000, and comparable amounts for vocational training/trade apprenticeship fees, will be available to award recipients through their college, university or occupational training institution. Scholarship monies will not be awarded directly to award recipients.
