Scholarship Description

The Euphradian Society was founded by students of the University of South Carolina in 1806 as a forensic and literary society. For more than two centuries, the Euphradian Society has been committed to nurturing the art of oratory and cultivating the virtue of its members as part of an effort to preserve the liberal arts heritage of the University of South Carolina.

Scholarship Details

  • Open to rising college freshmen
  • Essay must be 1,000 words and submitted via email
  • One scholarship awarded based on quality of essay submission

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be entering college as a freshman in the coming Fall
  • Must submit a 1,000-word essay in response to the given prompt
  • Must submit two certifications: Certification of Award Use and Certification of Originality

Application Process

  1. Write a 1,000-word essay responding to the following prompt:
    • “What role does civility have in political society and in serving the common good?”
  2. Ensure your essay uses proper composition and style; external sources are optional but permitted
  3. Prepare the two required certifications:

    • Certification of Award Use: “I, [student's name], certify that I intend to use the awarded funds only for education-related expenses. I further certify that I will notify the Euphradian Foundation and return the awarded funds in the event that I permanently withdraw from my academic institution prior to using the awarded funds.”
    • Certification of Originality: “I, [student's name], certify that the submitted essay is my own original work and was created without the use of means, such as generative artificial intelligence, that diminish my authorship.”
  4. Email your essay and certifications by September 1st
  5. Winner notified by email by October 1st

The Foundation offers lectures, seminars, scholarships, and other resources throughout the year to advance our mission.
