Scholarship Description

The George H. Nofer Scholarship for Law supports full-time graduate students with bilateral moderate to profound hearing loss who are attending an accredited law school. Established in honor of George H. Nofer’s service to the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell), this scholarship recognizes his contributions to law and deafness research and education.

Scholarship Details

  • Up to three scholarships of up to $5,000 each awarded annually
  • Supports full-time law students
  • Previous recipients may reapply for their second and third years of law school, provided they completed at least nine credit hours in the prior academic year

Eligibility Criteria

  • Use listening and spoken language as your primary mode of communication
  • Have a pre-lingual bilateral hearing loss (diagnosed before age 4) in the moderately-severe to profound range
  • Meet the hearing loss requirement with an unaided Pure-Tone Average (PTA) of 60 dB or greater in the better hearing ear, or have cochlear implants
  • Accepted or enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited law school for the 2025-2026 academic year

Formula for Calculating PTA

  • On the unaided audiogram, look at the results for the better hearing ear at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz
  • Add the three numbers together, then divide the total by three
  • To qualify, the PTA must be 60 or greater
